In June 2019, one of Japan’s largest retailers — convenience store chain Seven Eleven — announced that it will be replacing the packaging of its rice balls (onigiri) with bioplastic. If plastic is the problem, is bioplastic really the solution?

Bioplastics are a growing trend around the globe, researchers are finding innovative new materials to replace the oil-based plastics that are gradually covering up the earth’s surface area. From shellfishes, seaweed and cactus; there is an abundance of materials waiting to be explored by businesses and designers.

This workshop teaches participants about plastics, its relationship to other alternatives and how to make bioplastics from food ingredients. Bring along a small gift product – soapbar, jewellery, accessories, etc – and witness first-hand the future of packaging using smart biomaterials made by yourself to be gifted to a loved one guilt-free!
